Magnit and MTS Begin Accepting Digital Ruble

Magnit and MTS Accept Digital Ruble Starting September 1

Magnit and MTS will begin accepting the digital ruble starting September 1. This is the third form of national currency, with funds held directly in the Central Bank.

At Magnit stores, payment is available via a universal QR code at all cash registers, including self-service terminals. MTS users can access the service through the "My MTS" app and the "MTS Pay" feature. Previously, marketplaces Ozon and Wildberries announced similar plans, while Rostelecom and MegaFon are preparing to launch.

The law requires businesses with revenue exceeding RUB 120 million in 2025 to accept the digital currency when serviced by a systemically important bank.

  • Starting in 2027, the threshold drops to RUB 30 million
  • From 2028, it falls to RUB 5 million

A wallet for digital rubles can be opened at any of the 12 systemically important banks, which account for over 80% of the country's payment market. All operations for citizens are free of charge.

Each digital ruble has a unique code, allowing the Central Bank to track its path in real time. This technology enables the 'coloring' of funds—the technical ability to restrict specific money to certain purposes only.
