Digital Drosophila Brain Trades Bitcoin

A Coinbase platform engineer created an experiment in which the digitized brain of a fruit fly trades Bitcoin. The project, codenamed StonkFly, is open source on GitHub.

The system is based on a digital model of the nervous system of a male Drosophila. It consists of 166,700 neurons and 25.6 million connections between them.

The agent's learning process is built on visual data. Prices from the Coinbase exchange are converted into charts, which are perceived by virtual photoreceptors as pixels.

The neural network analyzes input data and makes a decision: to buy the asset, sell it, or hold the position. The system uses a reinforcement learning mechanism.

Portfolio growth activates 15 dopamine cells, mimicking reward. Losses affect stress zones, and trading commissions are also factored in as negative factors.

The project author emphasizes that this is an engineering signal, not a manifestation of genuine emotions or pain. The fly has strict constraints: no leverage or shorts, a $10 limit per trade, and 24 attempts per day.

By default, the agent trades virtual currency against real BTC-USDC quotes. A live trading account can be connected if needed.

Running a local copy requires Linux or macOS operating systems and at least 16 GB of RAM.

The developer honestly warns: the project does not prove the fly's ability to trade successfully. In a rising market, any buyer can look like an experienced trader.
