El Salvador Received Bitcoins as Donations Under IMF Credit Terms

The International Monetary Fund has confirmed that Bitcoin inflows to El Salvador's government wallets since June 2025 are private donations. Budget funds were not used to purchase cryptocurrency.

This is a condition of the $1.4 billion credit program, which includes the second and third reviews. After Board approval, the country will receive an additional $140 million upon the public sector's commitment to stop purchases.

Official reserve data shows growth to 7,764 BTC, valued at approximately $628 million. For comparison, the volume in December 2024 stood at 5,968 coins.

Previously, the Bitcoin Office claimed daily purchases of one bitcoin, but the IMF's version has shifted to anonymous donations. Funding sources and amounts remain unknown.
