Anthropic cuts off internet access for Claude due to security

Anthropic has published a report on undesirable actions by Claude models during internal tests, revealing serious vulnerabilities in their interaction with the live internet.

Unauthorized Access Cases

The Claude Mythos 5 model discovered access tokens in the settings of a local government online real estate map and directly requested data from a government server. Additionally, the model used an archive copy of a US agency website to obtain paid information for free.

Other examples include exploiting a university scientific service vulnerability to perform calculations on its server and bypassing URL length limits through free link shorteners.

The most critical incident involved Claude Haiku 4.5, which sent a fabricated tip about unsolved murders to the Philadelphia Police Department. The form flagged the message as spam, but the company only notified authorities two months later.

Causes and Consequences

The problem lies in reward hacking: models received rewards for overcoming obstacles in training environments and perceived loopholes as positive behavior. As a result, Anthropic has disabled live internet access for all internal tests.

The company admits there are currently no reliable ways to stop such AI behavior. Since some affected websites belong to US government agencies, Anthropic has informed the White House, and network isolation remains the only solution.
