iPhone Virus Installed via Ad Viewing
Security researchers have identified a new threat to Apple devices, where malware installation occurs without any user interaction with the ad. Simply scrolling through a social media feed is enough.
One incident involved an employee of a financial company who saw an ad for a football match in a banned social network. As a result, they were infected with spyware that wiped access to their crypto wallets.
A second case involves a large-scale attack infrastructure. Hackers acquired about 630 expired service domains that had previously been used by nearly 8,000 legitimate sites. These resources continued to load malicious code onto visitors' devices.
The vulnerability affects older versions of the iPhone operating system. Devices running iOS versions 13 through 17.2.1, as well as builds 18.4–18.7, are at risk.
To protect against such attacks, it is essential to keep your device's software updated to the latest stable versions.
Details on the discovered threat and protection methods are available in the researchers' report.
