Compromised Ledger Wallets with Modules for Stealing Crypto

Compromised Ledger hardware wallets equipped with a hidden spy module have been discovered in Russia. The device steals users' seed phrases, leading to the total loss of cryptocurrency funds.

The initial warning came from former Mt.Gox exchange head Mark Karpelès. He reported the presence of malicious software in Ledger devices, which helped identify at least 15 infected units.

Infected devices were found among nine sellers from various countries, including Germany and China. One user shared information on Reddit, noting that they had purchased the device on the Ozon platform.

Ledger officially acknowledged the issue with its products. According to the manufacturer, the devices were tampered with by a criminal group based in Southeast Asia.

The scale of the incident is assessed as extremely high: the total financial damage caused by the attackers exceeded $90 million. This underscores the risks of using compromised devices for storing digital assets.
