Trump Didn't Pay Promised $5,000 to US Citizens
Republicans lost the US midterm elections, leaving Donald Trump's promise to pay $5,000 to every adult citizen unfulfilled. The candidate had initially pledged these payments if his party won control of both chambers of Congress.
Trump later questioned the wisdom of such spending, noting that even $5,000 wouldn't cover the cost of a modest snack at his Mar-a-Lago club.
Estimates suggest there are about 270 million adult citizens in the US. Paying this amount to each would cost the federal budget more than $1.3 trillion.
