SpaceX to Conduct World's First Orbital Starship Refueling

SpaceX is preparing for the first-ever docking and fuel transfer between two Starship vehicles in orbit. The mission is targeted for the first half of 2027, with the procedure potentially taking place as early as February under favorable conditions.

This operation will mark the next step in the program's development, following the rocket's successful orbital launch last month.

Orbital Refueling Technology

The scenario for the upcoming mission involves several critical steps:

  • two massive spacecraft rendezvous in orbit
  • the vehicles dock together
  • super-cold rocket propellant is transferred from one vessel to the other

Transferring cryogenic fuel between two ships in microgravity has never been attempted before. The success of this test directly impacts future missions to Mars.

Successful implementation of this technology will enable Starship to travel farther than limited by a single tank fueled on Earth. This breakthrough could fundamentally change the approach to space travel.
