Sony releases AI upscaling QSSR for the base PS5

Sony has introduced the QSSR technology, which allows the base PlayStation 5 to use AI upscaling for graphics enhancement.

Previously, high-resolution image reconstruction was only available on the PS5 Pro via the PSSR mechanism.

The original neural network proved too resource-intensive for the standard console, so developers created a lightweight version.

QSSR (Quick Spectral Super Resolution) is an optimized model created in collaboration with AMD as part of the Amethyst project.

The technology is manually adapted to the hardware of the base PS5, allowing games to be rendered at low resolution and then upscaled.

The first games to receive QSSR support via an update are:

  • Marvel's Wolverine
  • Ghost of Yōtei

In these titles, the feature has been added as an additional graphical option. Sony plans to open its technology library to all PlayStation developers.

The company emphasizes that QSSR does not replace PSSR but represents a separate performance tier.

PSSR remains the gold standard for the PS5 Pro, providing deeper per-pixel frame processing.
