EV Charging Robots Appear in Chinese Parking Garages

Charging robots have appeared in Chinese parking garages, moving along ceiling rails to automatically connect to electric vehicles.

The charging process begins by calling the service via a WeChat mini-program or QR code. The robot moves along a rail that receives power directly, while cameras and sensors help precisely locate the vehicle's port.

The main advantage of this technology is the lack of need to run cables to each parking spot. One rail provides power to an entire row of cars, optimizing parking infrastructure.

Slow AC charging is used, which is ideal for offices, shopping malls, and residential complexes where vehicles remain parked for extended periods.

In addition to ceiling systems, there are ground-based charging robots from companies such as CharGo, NaaS, and other manufacturers. Beijing plans to install 1,000 such devices on 150 parking lots.

According to CharGo's forecasts, by 2030, robotic charging will serve up to 20% of all electric vehicles in China.
