North Korea Accused of Hacking Binance for $6 Billion
The FBI has officially attributed responsibility for the largest cryptocurrency theft in the history of cybercrime to North Korea. The attack was carried out by the North Korean hacker group TraderTraitor.
Scale of the Incident
According to TRM Labs, the attackers stole approximately $6.36 billion over a period of about 20 minutes. The funds were withdrawn through 10 different blockchains. This amount is four times greater than the losses from the Bybit hack in 2025.
Causes and Consequences
The largest cryptocurrency exchange linked the attack to the compromise of one engineer's laptop. About $3 billion was frozen, but the hackers still retained more than 420,000 ETH and 18,270 BTC, worth around $2.4 billion.
Recovery of Funds
Binance announced the recovery of 90% of the stolen assets, guaranteeing no losses for users. US authorities published a list of hacker addresses to block transactions via DeFi services and nodes.
