PS6 Memory Cost Exceeds PS5 Console Price
Insider KeplerL2 reported that memory components for the upcoming PlayStation 6 cost Sony more than $680. This amount exceeds the initial retail price of the entire PS5 console.
For comparison: the base version of the PS5 in 2020 cost $499.99, and the digital edition was $399.99. The cost of memory components does not include the processor, cooling system, or power supply unit.
Known RAM specifications:
- GDDR7 video memory with a 160-bit bus
- Capacity from 30 to 40 GB
- Possible capacity reduction for cost savings
Cost estimates have been rising throughout the year. In March, the insider valued the console at $760; by July, this figure reached $960. The main reason is the shortage of DRAM and NAND due to demand from AI data centers.
According to TechPowerUp's forecast, if high memory prices persist, the PS6 could exceed $1000. Sony has not yet announced an official price, but the console is expected to launch in late 2027.
