Cyberattack on Refrigerators in France: Millions in Damages
On the night of October 12, hackers attacked refrigeration control systems in France, causing the spoilage of thousands of tons of food.
Massive Cyberattack
The attackers exploited a vulnerability in the systems of the Danish company Danfoss. They remotely changed temperature settings, causing them to rise to +50 °C. This affected approximately 150–200 Intermarché stores and nearly 100 U network locations. E.Leclerc stores and other retail chains were also impacted.
Consequences for Retail
By morning, stores discovered spoiled stocks of meat, dairy products, fish, and frozen goods. Products that could no longer be safely sold after the temperature breach had to be discarded. The Paris prosecutor's office has already launched an investigation into the incident.
Financial Losses
The exact scale of the damage is still being calculated. Industry representatives estimate losses could reach several million euros. The incident highlights the vulnerability of supermarket critical infrastructure to cyberattacks.
