Google AI Agents Completed Minecraft by Writing Nearly 2,800 Programs
Google DeepMind demonstrated that AI agents based on Gemini 4 Argon can independently complete the complex game Minecraft. Four agents killed the Ender Dragon by writing nearly 2,800 programs over 27 hours.
Each agent controlled a character via the Mineflayer library, receiving only textual data about blocks and mobs without a visual interface. Roles were distributed automatically: one gathered resources, another searched for diamonds, a third crafted tools, and the fourth built a Nether portal.
The agents used geometry to locate the stronghold by analyzing End Beacon trajectories. After each failure, they analyzed errors and recorded rules to avoid repeating them. To destroy the dragon's crystals, they built earthen pillars and climbed to the tops of the towers.
Victory required 605 deaths on easy difficulty. Errors occurred in 22% of cases, and the computation cost amounted to approximately $520 with discounts. For comparison, an agent using Claude Opus 5 with pre-made tools completed the game faster and cheaper.
