Denmark abandons switch to Collabora office suite

Denmark's Ministry of Digitalisation has officially scrapped the project to switch from proprietary Microsoft Office to the open-source office suite Collabora. Earlier in the summer of 2025, the ministry had announced its intention to move away from the US provider to reduce dependency on solutions controlled by the US administration.

Compatibility issues arose even during the testing phase, which involved only 38 ministry employees.

Critical failures began at the end of 2025: Office format files opened as blank pages in Collabora, and vice versa. This was due to fundamental incompatibility between the open ODF format used in Collabora and Microsoft's OOXML specification.

The experiment was ultimately halted early due to snap parliamentary elections in early 2026. The ministry confirmed the project's closure and stated that there are no plans to resume migration to an open-source solution.
