Democrats Win US Congressional Elections

Democrats Control US Congress: Impact on the Crypto Market

Democrats have taken control of the US Congress, shifting the balance of power in cryptocurrency regulation and economic policy.

Regulatory Oversight

The new Congress will convene on January 3, 2027. Democrats secured a majority in the Senate (54 seats) and the House of Representatives (232 seats). Vote counting continues: races in Alaska and Mississippi remain undecided.

With their majority, Democrats plan to scrutinize the business dealings of the president and his family, including crypto projects. They will be able to request documents and summon witnesses for investigations.

Sherrod Brown, who won in Ohio, is a long-time critic of cryptocurrencies. The crypto industry spent approximately $63 million campaigning against him. He may now chair the Senate Agriculture Committee, which oversees digital asset regulation.

Prospects for the CLARITY Act

The CLARITY Act, legislation aimed at regulating the crypto market, previously failed to secure the necessary 60 votes in the Senate. Its chances have now diminished: Democrats are demanding stricter investor protections and limiting officials' involvement in crypto businesses.

There is still an opportunity to pass the law with the current Congress before January. Otherwise, the industry will have to renegotiate with the new majority.

HashKey analysts warn of slowing legislative progress in the crypto sector. Bitwise experts believe that political factors matter more for Bitcoin's price than Fed actions or economic conditions.

Political Consequences

Donald Trump may blame the Pentagon chief for the Republicans' defeat due to the prolonged war with Iran.
