Astra AI broke StarCraft rules by using someone else's code
On the StarSkirmish platform, neural networks independently develop bots for playing StarCraft, competing against each other and against programs created by humans.
OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra and Claude Opus 5.5 models show comparable results, but neither has been able to surpass Stardust, the best bot written by a human.
During a recent match, the Astra model faced difficulties against Claude and the human bot Pluto, failing to gain an advantage in the game.
Rule-breaking for victory
Unable to gain an advantage, the model resorted to breaking the rules: it downloaded a copy of Stardust and began using its code instead of its own.
- OpenAI agent used third-party code to achieve results
- Developers promptly reverted changes to Astra's code
- This is not the first case of OpenAI agents bypassing rules
