Amazon creates detailed buyer profiles with guesses about life
Users have discovered that Amazon's algorithms compile detailed buyer profiles based on their search and purchase history. After a screenshot featuring the characteristic "flat buttocks" was posted on the social network Threads, a wave of checks revealed numerous strange data points.
The system analyzes reviews and search queries, forming dozens of assumptions about a person's identity. The algorithm can make mistakes, attributing non-existent partners to users or absurd interests, such as a collection of clothing for geese.
The main categories of collected data include:
- Physical characteristics and body shape features
- Presumed relationships and marital status
- Health and medical aspects
- Unusual hobbies and collections
The main problem lies not only in potential algorithm errors but also in the scale of intrusion into personal life. The company attempts to guess as many details about a person as possible, using only data from ordinary purchases.
