AI helped solve a mathematical problem that had been unsolved

Chinese researchers, using artificial intelligence, have proven the three-dimensional conjecture of French mathematician Étienne Ghys. This problem had remained unsolved for 31 years, since 1995.

To solve the problem, the team applied the multimodal AI model Shusheng S2, developed by the Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. The algorithm proposed various proof options, while mathematicians evaluated the ideas and guided further search.

Ghys's conjecture describes systems of ordered chaos, where points in some directions rapidly move apart, while in others they come closer together. Work on the proof began this summer.
