AI Restores 1960s Bird Songs for Population Conservation

Artificial Intelligence Restores Bird Songs in Argentina

Researchers from Argentina have used artificial intelligence to restore bird song melodies recorded by ornithologists in the 1960s. Scientists transformed graphical diagrams of pitch changes into real audio recordings using an AI model of a bird's vocal apparatus.

The restored songs were played through speakers in a park, allowing young individuals to learn by imitation. In the following season, one such bird began passing the melody on to other members of the species, demonstrating successful social learning.

The practical goal of this project is to address the problem of declining bird populations. As the number of individuals decreases, older teachers become unavailable, leading to simplified songs and making it harder to find a mating partner.

Restoring the musical heritage of birds helps maintain the complexity of their vocalizations, which is critical for the survival of the species as population numbers decline.
