Woman Arrested for Threats Made in Chat with AI Claude

A Florida resident was arrested after a conversation with the AI Claude, in which she threatened to shoot up the Lee County Sheriff's Office. The next day, the woman wrote that she had purchased a new handgun.

During questioning, the 30-year-old suspect explained that she used the AI as a diary to vent her emotions. However, Anthropic's automated safety systems detected threatening language and referred the case to human moderators.

Experts deemed the threat real and independently contacted law enforcement. The woman was taken into custody at her home without resistance. She is charged with written threats of violence, which under state law carries a penalty of up to 15 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.

The sheriff emphasized that AI users are never truly anonymous. Anthropic's terms explicitly allow the sharing of user data without consent or a police warrant when there is a risk of imminent physical harm or death.
