Revival of the Heaviest Insects in the World

Scientists Revived the Heaviest Insects in the World

Scientists have successfully revived the population of weta — the largest crickets in the world, which were previously on the verge of complete extinction. 11,000 individuals have already been released into the wild.

Species Characteristics

Weta are found exclusively in New Zealand. These insects can reach a length of up to 10 centimeters and weigh as much as an adult mouse.

Rescue History

In the 1990s, the species faced the threat of extinction. Biologists and volunteers conducted large-scale work to preserve the insects.

  • The restoration program lasted 15 years
  • Specialists fed and cared for the individuals
  • The population was restored to critical mass

Now, the restored weta population has been released back into their natural habitat to support regional biodiversity.
