Scammers Stole $500K from Crypto Firm via Fake WhatsApp Chat
Criminals in Hong Kong carried out a large-scale cyberattack on a crypto exchange using a fake WhatsApp chat. The scammers hacked an employee's account, copied the group chat data, and requested a cryptocurrency exchange under the guise of a client. The employee transferred funds to the specified wallet without suspecting fraud.
Scale of the Problem
The scammers blocked the victim's contacts and created a fake work group that completely mimicked the original. They used the same names, avatars, and participant lists. After the funds were transferred, the employee attempted to deduct the amount from the client's account, but the operation was halted after a call to the client confirmed no such request had been made.
Incident Statistics
- In the last two weeks, Hong Kong police registered over 150 similar cases
- Total damages amounted to approximately $1.93 million
- The average size of a single theft exceeds $12,000
This case highlights the growing threat of social engineering in the cryptocurrency sector. Criminals are increasingly exploiting trust in internal corporate communication channels to commit financial crimes.
