Russia Plans to Introduce a Tax on Sweets

Russia to introduce tax on sweet products

Russia is considering introducing a "sugar tax." Officials propose excluding raw sugar and confectionery products from the list of goods subject to the preferential VAT rate of 10%.

Under the proposed measures, special excise duties are planned for chocolate and non-chocolate candies. This initiative is under review and may be adopted as early as October 15.

Implementation of these proposals will lead to a significant price increase in the confectionery market. It is expected that the cost of sweets will rise by 20–40% after the introduction of new tax rates.
