Polygon Considers Hard Fork to Return Stolen Funds

Polygon network developers are considering a hard fork to return funds stolen in recent cyberattacks. This initiative aims to forcibly deduct assets from the blocked wallets of attackers.

Following attacks on Binance and Polymarket, five addresses belonging to hackers were blocked on the Polygon blockchain. These wallets hold approximately 70.5 million POL tokens, worth around $6.5 million USD.

Current validator measures blocking transactions from suspicious addresses do not allow returning stolen assets to the affected companies. A new hard fork could become a technical solution for transferring funds without the owners' consent.

The proposed hard fork will allow developers to:

  • Forcibly deduct funds from attackers' wallets
  • Transfer assets to affected companies without owner consent
  • Restore financial losses after security incidents
