PlayStation Controller to Become Contactless Payment Terminal

Sony has patented a PlayStation controller capable of reading payment data from a card or smartphone. The technology enables transactions without manual entry of details.

The payment process works as follows:

• The console initiates a payment request.

The user brings their phone or bank card close to the controller.

• The controller detects the device via NFC, Bluetooth, or physical touch.

Connection confirmation is provided through light indicators, sound signals, or vibration.

• Data is transferred from the phone to the controller, and then to the gaming console.

The controller does not process payments itself but acts as a data transmitter for cloud service verification.

This new feature is designed for purchasing games, add-ons, and subscriptions, as well as topping up gift card balances.

The patent also describes non-payment capabilities of the device:

• Quick guest access in multiplayer modes.

Player ID transfer.

• Sending screenshots and gameplay recordings to a smartphone.
