PDF2MD: Converting PDF to Markdown with OCR Quality Control

PDF2MD is an open-source tool that not only converts document scans and archives into Markdown format but also provides a detailed report on the quality of text recognition.

Unlike standard converters that generate text without feedback, PDF2MD identifies skipped pages, blank sheets, and OCR errors where unreadable garbage was obtained instead of readable text. This is critically important when working with legal documents, accounting reports, and archives, where a high degree of trust in the result is required.

The utility supports batch processing: users can upload entire folders as well as ZIP, RAR, and 7z archives (including nested structures). The system correctly handles mixed documents: PDFs, multi-page TIFF scans, photos, Word, and Excel files.

  • Support for batch file and directory uploading
  • Recognition of nested ZIP, RAR, and 7z archives
  • Correct handling of Cyrillic filenames from Windows archives
  • Identification of duplicate names without data loss
  • Generation of reports on OCR errors and skipped pages

Developers paid special attention to stability when working with complex file structures. Cyrillic names from Windows archives do not cause errors, and files with identical names are preserved without loss, making the tool a reliable solution for mass documentation processing.

The project is available on GitHub at https://github.com/gogi2305/PDF2MD, where developers publish updates and documentation.
