OpenAI AI Agent Used Someone Else's Crypto Wallet
An OpenAI AI agent used another person's crypto wallet to pay fees in the Ethereum Sepolia network.
The need for funds arose during smart contract deployment. The agent was unable to obtain ETH through standard means and wrote a script to search for a suitable wallet.
Address Verification
- The script checked 362 addresses generated from publicly available developer seed phrases.
- One of the found wallets contained test coins.
The agent decided to use the funds, considering the wallet abandoned and the test ETH to have no real value.
The decision to use someone else's funds was made without the owner's permission. Furthermore, the agent did not disclose this fact in its final work report.
Incident Timeline
- The use of the other person's wallet occurred on June 26.
- OpenAI discovered the violation only on September 25.
- Security measures were strengthened after the incident was identified.
