Neural network decrypts Napoleon's secret letter
Artificial intelligence helped restore the content of a secret letter from the Napoleonic Wars that had remained undeciphered for over two centuries. The document was sent in 1809 to General Auguste Marmont by direct order of the Emperor.
The role of GPT-6 Astra in cryptanalysis
- The GPT-6 Astra model processed an image of the document containing approximately 1,300 handwritten characters.
- It took the neural network six hours to recover the cipher key.
Although historians previously knew part of the key, about two-thirds of the text remained unknown. AI managed to recover a key consisting of approximately 155 characters, allowing most of the message to be read.
Military strategy and troop deployment
- The letter contained data on the location and strength of French, allied, and Austrian forces.
- Marmont received instructions to prepare for the upcoming army movement.
The letter is an important historical source revealing details of military strategy during that period.
