IMF approves $139 million tranche to El Salvador

The International Monetary Fund has approved a new tranche of $139 million for El Salvador. This decision was made despite the country violating its previous commitment to refrain from purchasing bitcoin under the lending program.

Along with approving funding, the IMF again demanded that the government of El Salvador completely cease cryptocurrency purchases. If the country wishes to receive further financing, it must comply with this condition. An exception is made only for receiving BTC as donations.

The fund's decision demonstrates a balance between financial support and compliance with lending program conditions. El Salvador remains the only country to have adopted bitcoin as legal tender.
