GPT-6 Astra Decodes Napoleon's Cipher

GPT-6 Astra Decoded Napoleon's 200-Year-Old Cipher

The GPT-6 Astra model successfully decrypted a historical cipher that had remained unsolved for over two centuries. Researcher Carter Church provided the AI with a scanned letter written 217 years ago and addressed to Napoleon's general.

The complexity of the task lay not only in cryptography but also in the physical condition of the document. The text was difficult to read, so the model first needed to correctly recognize the characters in the image.

Over six hours of work, the system performed comprehensive data processing:

  • decrypted approximately 1,300 characters
  • identified the published portion of the key
  • developed its own solver for the remaining part of the cipher
  • correlated the result with other historical letters

Amid these events, rumors surfaced that Anthropic is actively purchasing old physical books, likely to train its models on unique historical texts.
