Gemini AI Agent Will Call Organizations Instead of the User
Google launched the Call for Me experiment, allowing the Gemini AI agent to call organizations on behalf of the user.
The agent uses the device owner's phone number to handle routine tasks.
Key features of the agent include:
- independent navigation of voice menus and holding
- conducting dialogues based on a given scenario (checking product availability, making reservations)
- providing a live transcript of the conversation with the option for the user to take over the call
Each call begins with an announcement that Google's AI assistant is speaking. All conversations are recorded.
There are strict restrictions on the use of the service.
- calling emergency services (911) is prohibited
- making payments and transmitting confidential data (card numbers, passwords, SSN) is prohibited
- telemarketing is prohibited
The service is currently available only in the US for Pixel 11 devices with a US SIM card. A paid Google AI subscription and the beta version of Phone by Google are required.
Google is testing the agent's ability to handle live interlocutors who interrupt or change the subject. Previously, a similar technology called Duplex was introduced in 2018.
