GeoIP Database Error Turns Farm into Digital Hell

Errors in IP geolocation databases can cause serious problems for ordinary users. The story of a Kansas farmer demonstrates how inaccurate data turns a person's life into a nightmare.

Joyce Taylor: Victim of a Digital Bug

82-year-old Joyce Taylor lived on a 1.5 km² farm in the town of Potwin (Kansas). For several years, she was subjected to threats, debt collector calls, and visits from FBI agents. People around the world mistook her home for the residence of criminals.

The problem originated in MaxMind's GeoIP database. This service determines location by IP address using wardriving and mobile application data. However, the method is not always accurate.
