First death from plague in Russia in 10 years
Russia has recorded its first fatal case of plague in the last ten years. The victim was an employee of the anti-plague institute who worked with infected animals.
The incident occurred after the specialist broke a test tube and came into contact with the dangerous bacterium. The employee reported the incident to doctors herself, but she could not be saved.
The patient was hospitalized in an Irkutsk region hospital on September 29. Two days later, despite medical intervention, the woman died.
Quarantine has been declared following the death. The healthcare facility has restricted admission of new patients and their discharge to prevent the spread of infection.
