F-Droid 2.0: New Interface and Security Changes

The alternative open-source Android app store F-Droid has released a major version 2.0 update, which the development team worked on for over a year.

A complete interface redesign was implemented using Kotlin and Jetpack Compose. Navigation has been simplified to three main sections: Discover, Search, and My Apps.

The updated search indexes titles, descriptions, categories, and translations in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. Games are now distributed across 17 genres instead of a single general category.

• Background automatic downloading and installation of updates are enabled by default
• Parallel downloading and installation of multiple apps is supported
• Installation via the system installer requires prior confirmation

Developers note that the ability to install third-party stores was achieved due to pressure from the Digital Markets Act and antitrust proceedings in the European Union.

The new version has lost the function of wiping apps upon a panic button signal, such as Ripple. Automatic Tor detection has also been removed, leaving only manual proxy configuration.

System requirements have been tightened: support for Android 6 has been discontinued; Android 7 or higher is required for operation.
