Europol recommends ZK-STARK for protection against quantum attacks
Europol has identified Account Abstraction and ZK-STARK technologies as tools to protect against quantum attacks on crypto wallets.
The agency highlighted StarkWare's developments, recalling the company's plans to complete Starknet's transition to post-quantum protection by 2027. This is due to the threat of asset theft through computing private keys from public ones using powerful quantum computers.
Key risks and Europol recommendations:
- Quantum computers could potentially compute private keys, creating a risk of crypto asset theft
- Bitcoin and Ethereum have not yet implemented post-quantum cryptography; the transition will take several years
- Wallets face higher risks than networks, as blockchain integrity relies on robust hash functions
- The industry needs to start preparing for post-quantum protection in advance
