Claude Blocks Users with VPNs in Russia and Hong Kong
Claude has started banning users with VPNs in Russia and Hong Kong
Anthropic's Claude service has begun blocking users who utilize virtual private networks. In Russia, dozens of accounts have been restricted, including those of developers and top IT executives.
Blocked users receive notifications about suspicious activity and lose access to their accounts, the Claude Code tool, and all chat history.
Regional Detection Technology
According to user complaints, Anthropic has learned to determine the actual geographic location of clients even when they actively use VPN services to bypass restrictions.
The Situation in Hong Kong
A similar wave of bans affected users from Hong Kong. Some had successfully bypassed regional restrictions via VPN for months but now also lost access to the Claude service.
Details on the ban situation in Hong Kong can be found in this SCMP report.
