AMD Acquires World Labs for $8.2 Billion
AMD has agreed to acquire World Labs, a startup specializing in technologies for generating interactive three-dimensional environments. The deal is valued at approximately $8.2 billion and will be fully paid in stock.
World Labs develops so-called "world models" that go beyond text generation, capable of generating, reconstructing, and simulating complex 3D spaces. The company's first product, Marble, allows users to create persistent virtual worlds for download.
Technologies and Applications
Key application areas for World Labs' developments include robotics and complex simulations. The new Atlas model will serve as the foundation for future versions of the startup's products. The company has also committed to continuing the release of open-source models.
History of Cooperation and Regulatory Approval
Prior to the full acquisition, AMD invested $1 billion in a World Labs funding round earlier this year. The startup's models previously ran partially on AMD Instinct accelerators. This is the second-largest deal in the company's history, following the $50 billion acquisition of Xilinx.
The deal closure is planned before the end of the current year, subject to necessary regulatory approvals.
